The Outer Worlds 2 Launches October 30 with Choice-Driven Space Adventure
The Outer Worlds 2 delivers choice-driven RPG gameplay in the Arcadia Star System with faction conflicts, customizable character builds, and thousands of story variations.
Obsidian Entertainment released The Outer Worlds 2 on October 29, 2025, bringing the studio's signature choice-driven RPG experience to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Battle.net. The sequel introduced players to the Arcadia Star System, a new frontier where decisions shape thousands of story variations across competing factions and planets.
Set in the year 2362, the game's narrative centers on dangerous rifts in spacetime caused by warp-drive technology connecting the colony's planets. Players, dispatched by the Earth Directorate, investigate these anomalies while navigating relationships with six major factions vying for control of Arcadia.

The Arcadia Star System
The Arcadia star system comprises three main planets: Hemera, Elysium, and Nyx. Most of the game's action takes place around Elysium's five moons: Eden, Dorado, Cloister, Praetor, and Recluse. Each location features unique environments and faction influences.
Six Major Factions
The Outer Worlds 2 features six distinct factions:
- Earth Directorate: The player character's main faction
- The Protectorate: Authoritarian dictatorship headed by the god-like Sovereign, demanding utter fealty from all subjects
- Auntie's Choice: Megacorporation formed after Auntie Cleo's hostile takeover of Spacer's Choice, featuring ruthlessly individualistic corporate culture
- Order of the Ascendant: Scholarly faction focused on enlightenment and the pursuit of knowledge, mixing religious devotion with scientific focus
- Sub Rosa: Subversive resistance faction
- Rift Cult: Enigmatic faction tied to the mysterious rifts
Player choices meaningfully affect faction relationships, and the game supports multiple paths including singular faction alignment, brokering peace between groups, or complete independence from all political forces.
Third-Person Perspective
A new feature in The Outer Worlds 2 is the ability to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives, which was unavailable in the original game outside of limited sequences.
Enhanced RPG Systems
The game expanded on the original's RPG mechanics with enhanced character customization covering attributes, skills, and equipment. The returning Flaw System observes player behavior and suggests playstyle-specific enhancements, offering advantages with corresponding tradeoffs. This system enables diverse problem-solving approaches tailored to individual playstyles.
Radio stations broadcast faction-specific perspectives that change content in response to player actions. Companion relationships evolve depending on how players approach missions.
Development
Game Director Brandon Adler and Design Director Matthew Singh led the development at Obsidian Entertainment. According to Adler, faction design was a key priority: "Very, very early on, factions were something that I felt we could have done better from the first game. The first game had a lot of factions, but I like factions that are omnipresent throughout the entire experience."
The standalone story requires no prior knowledge of the first game. Full Japanese localization supports the worldwide launch, and the title was available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
