State of Play Japan | November 11, 2025
Sony dropped a packed 40-minute State of Play presentation on November 11, 2025, focusing exclusively on games from Japan and Asia. The showcase delivered a mix of major remakes, indie gems, and substantial DLC updates that'll keep PlayStation fans busy well into 2026.
Classic JRPGs Get the Remake Treatment
The biggest surprise came from Square Enix with the announcement of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a full HD-2D remake of the PlayStation classic. Set to launch on February 5, 2026, the game showcased stunning new visuals that blend retro aesthetics with modern graphics. Dragon Quest VII originally launched in 2000 and was known for its massive 100+ hour adventure, making this remake one of the most anticipated releases of next year.
Horror fans got their own treat with the reveal of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake from Koei Tecmo. Scheduled for March 12, 2026, this reimagining of the 2003 survival horror classic promises to terrify a new generation of players with updated visuals and gameplay mechanics. The Fatal Frame series has long been a fan favorite for its unique camera-based combat and genuinely unsettling atmosphere.
Indie Spotlight and Asian Titles
The presentation highlighted several promising indie and mid-tier titles making their way to PlayStation. Coffee Talk Tokyo caught attention as the next entry in Toge Productions' beloved visual novel series, launching March 5, 2026. The game moves the franchise's signature late-night café conversations to Japan's bustling capital.
InKonbini: One Store, Many Stories offers players the chance to run their own Japanese convenience store in an April 2026 release. The cozy simulation game captures the unique atmosphere of Japan's ubiquitous corner shops.
Wandering Sword brings pixel art martial arts action to PS5 on May 28, 2026. This ancient China-set RPG features a complete edition with all DLC included and full Japanese voice acting. The tile-based gameplay draws inspiration from early Final Fantasy titles while carving out its own identity.
Other notable indies include MotionRec, a pixel art sidescroller with a unique move-recording mechanic, and Never Grave: The Witch and the Curse, a 2D action title from PocketPair Publishing slated for March.
Major DLC and Updates Coming Soon
Current PlayStation owners have plenty to look forward to with substantial updates across popular titles. Elden Ring Nightreign receives "The Forsaken Hollows" expansion on December 4, while Monster Hunter Wilds adds the fearsome Gogmazios monster in a free update on December 16.
Gran Turismo 7 gets its Power Pack this December, adding more content including a 24-hour race. Fighting game fans can jump into the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls second closed beta in early December, featuring Ghost Rider and Spider-Man alongside new X-Mansion and Savage Land stages.
Octopath Traveler 0 launches December 4 with a demo featuring the first three hours available immediately. The prequel explores events before the original game, continuing the series' gorgeous HD-2D art style.
PlayStation Hardware Announcements
Beyond software, Sony revealed a new 27-inch PlayStation-branded gaming monitor featuring a 240Hz refresh rate and built-in DualSense controller charging mount. Japanese players also get access to a more affordable PS5 model priced at ¥55,000, though this version remains Japan-exclusive.
