The wait is finally over for fans of Team Ninja's punishing action RPG series. Nioh 3 has been officially revealed at The Game Awards 2025, and it's bringing the most ambitious entry yet to PlayStation 5 and Steam on February 6, 2026. Better still, a playable demo arrives on January 29, 2026, giving players a taste of the brutal combat that awaits—with save data carrying over to the full game.

A Dynasty Torn Apart by Darkness

Nioh 3 takes place in Genna 8 (1622), a pivotal moment in Japanese history when the Tokugawa shogunate was consolidating its power over a unified Japan. Players step into the role of Tokugawa Takechiyo, grandson of the legendary Tokugawa Ieyasu and designated heir to the shogunate. Since childhood, Takechiyo has possessed the rare ability to perceive guardian spirits—supernatural entities invisible to ordinary people.

Tokugawa Takechiyo, the protagonist

But power invites treachery, even from within one's own bloodline. Tokugawa Kunimatsu, Takechiyo's younger brother, was once favored as a potential successor until their grandfather declared the official line of succession. Consumed by hatred and resentment, Kunimatsu has allied himself with dark forces and now leads a terrifying yokai army against Edo Castle itself. When the supernatural assault threatens to overwhelm the shogunate, Takechiyo uses his guardian spirit Kusanagi to transcend the boundaries of time, embarking on a journey across multiple eras to confront this existential threat.

Four Eras, One Apocalyptic Conflict

Nioh 3 introduces an unprecedented narrative scope by spanning four distinct historical periods, each with its own challenges and supernatural horrors:

The frozen Heian-era Kyoto

Edo Period: The peaceful shogunate era that Tokugawa Ieyasu fought to establish is shattered when "hell" itself seems to spill into the mortal realm. Yokai overwhelm the land, and Edo Castle—the administrative heart of Japan—becomes ground zero for the conflict.

Sengoku Period: Travel back to the chaotic warring states era, where the Tokugawa and Takeda clans clash in Totomi Province. Here, supernatural forces have allied themselves with the Takeda, adding a terrifying dimension to the already brutal warfare of the period.

Combat in the Sengoku era

Heian Period: Ancient Kyoto stands frozen in supernatural cold emanating from the Imperial Palace. This once-glorious capital has become humanity's final stronghold against the encroaching darkness, its inhabitants desperately clinging to survival.

Bakumatsu Period: Perhaps the most disturbing era awaits in a dystopian future where a corrupted Kunimatsu rules as eternal shogun. Japan itself has been consumed by darkness, presenting a nightmarish vision of what awaits if Takechiyo fails.

The Crucible: A New Threat Mechanic

At the heart of Nioh 3's supernatural menace lies The Crucible—domains filled with powerful negative energy born from malevolent thoughts. These areas isolate regions from the outside world, trap inhabitants within their boundaries, and generate spirit stones that fuel the yokai invasion. To purify these corrupted zones, players must locate and destroy the crucible spike that serves as the domain's energy source.

Yokai enemies attack

The yokai themselves represent a terrifying bestiary drawn from Japanese folklore. Otoroshi dwell in shrine gates, Sunakake-baba are sand-throwing spirits that blind their victims, and Kyokotsu are vengeful entities born from the resentment of those who died in battle. Each creature demands specific tactics to defeat, rewarding players who study their patterns and weaknesses.

Dual Combat Philosophies: Samurai vs Ninja

Nioh 3 introduces the most significant combat evolution in the series with two distinct tactical philosophies that fundamentally change how you approach encounters:

Samurai combat style

Samurai Style emphasizes direct confrontation and martial mastery. The new Arts Proficiency system enhances your martial techniques as you fight, while the Deflect mechanic rewards precise timing. Block an enemy attack at exactly the right moment, and you'll recover Ki while boosting your Arts and Ninjutsu gauges—setting up devastating counterattacks that can turn the tide of battle.

Ninja Style prioritizes agility and tactical maneuvering. Swift dodging, aerial maneuvers, and ninjutsu techniques allow you to control the battlefield from unexpected angles. Successful evasion not only restores Ki but also extends your invulnerability window, letting skilled players weave through enemy attacks like shadows.

An Arsenal Worthy of Legends

The weapon variety in Nioh 3 is staggering, with each combat style offering its own selection of deadly implements:

Samurai Weapons: Swords, Dual Swords, Spears, Axes, Odachi, Switchglaives, and Cestuses provide options ranging from precise single-target damage to sweeping crowd control.

Ninja Weapons: Ninja Swords, Dual Ninja Swords, Kusarigama, Tonfa, Hatchets, Splitstaves, and Talons emphasize speed and versatility, allowing for rapid stance transitions and combo extensions.

Guardian Spirit abilities

The signature Ki Pulse mechanic returns, requiring players to time their recovery after attacks to regain stamina efficiently. Combined with the returning Stance System—which modifies attack patterns, damage output, and energy consumption—combat remains the deep, demanding experience that series veterans expect.

Guardian Spirits and Supernatural Powers

Guardian Spirits return with expanded functionality. Beyond providing powerful attacks, these supernatural allies now grant exploration abilities like cliff-leaping, opening up new traversal options across Nioh 3's more open environments.

The Living Artifact system allows players to temporarily merge with their Guardian Spirit, transforming it into a weapon during critical moments. This fusion represents the ultimate expression of the bond between Takechiyo and his supernatural protector.

New to the series is the Onmyo Box, which generates magic talismans from collected yokai soul cores. Even more dramatically, it allows players to summon defeated enemies to fight alongside them—turning the yokai's own power against the darkness.

Legendary Mentors and Historical Figures

Takechiyo's journey is shaped by encounters with some of Japan's most legendary figures:

Yagyu Munenori serves as his swordsmanship instructor, teaching the techniques that made the Yagyu clan famous throughout Japan. Hattori Hanzo, the legendary ninja, provides training in the shadowy arts. Saito Fuku, Takechiyo's wet nurse, instructs him in Onmyo Magic—the mystical traditions that manipulate spiritual energy.

Players will also encounter warriors from across time, including the fearsome Takeda Shingen and the tragic hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune. A mysterious figure named Himiko—the ancient queen who ruled the Yamatai Kingdom and possessed natural talent for Kido sorcery—plays a significant role in the narrative, her mystical abilities proving essential to confronting the supernatural threat.

Multiplayer and Online Features

Nioh 3 continues the series' tradition of robust online functionality. Co-op expeditions allow players to tackle challenges together, while the visitor summon system lets you call upon other players when facing particularly difficult encounters. Revenant encounters return, letting you battle the spirits of fallen players for their equipment. The new Bloodedge Demon battles offer opportunities to claim rare loot from especially powerful opponents.

Demo Rewards and Early Purchase Bonuses

Players who complete the demo releasing on January 29, 2026 will receive the Twin Snake Helmet as a bonus item in the full game. Early purchasers also gain access to William and Hideyoshi armor sets—a nod to the protagonists of the first two Nioh games.
