Nintendo has released a free update for Donkey Kong Returns HD, adding fan-favorite character Dixie Kong as a playable partner alongside new gameplay modes and Nintendo Switch 2 enhancements.
The Version 1.1.0 update is available now for all Donkey Kong Returns HD owners on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
Dixie Kong Returns

Dixie Kong joins Diddy Kong as a selectable partner for Donkey Kong. Players can choose between the two companions by collecting their respective barrels mid-stage: DX Barrels for Dixie and DD Barrels for Diddy.
Dixie brings her signature ponytail spin ability, allowing players to gain extra height during jumps. This technique opens up new possibilities for reaching higher platforms and distant ledges that were previously out of reach.
In two-player co-op mode, Player 2 can pre-select their preferred character before stages begin, with the option to switch between Dixie and Diddy using the control stick.
Turbo Mode

The update introduces Turbo Mode, a high-speed time attack challenge available on previously completed stages. In this mode, all characters and enemies move at accelerated speeds as players race to reach the goal within target time limits.
Successful runs earn Gold or Silver medals based on completion times, adding replay value for players seeking to master every stage.
Nintendo Switch 2 Enhancements
Players on Nintendo Switch 2 receive additional benefits including enhanced graphics quality with 4K support in TV mode, significantly reduced loading times compared to the original Switch version, and support for "Nearby Play" local wireless multiplayer.
The Nearby Play feature allows two players to enjoy co-op gameplay on separate screens using just one console and one copy of the game.
A Beloved Franchise

Donkey Kong Returns HD is the high-definition remaster of the acclaimed 2010 Wii title Donkey Kong Country Returns, which marked the franchise's revival after years of dormancy. The HD version includes all courses from both the original Wii release and the 2013 Nintendo 3DS port.
The Donkey Kong Country series has a storied history dating back to the groundbreaking 1994 Super Nintendo original developed by Rare. That game pioneered pre-rendered 3D graphics on home consoles, sold over 9.3 million copies, and helped extend the SNES lifespan against emerging competition from the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. The original has since been ported to Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and various Virtual Console services.
