Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Launches October 30 Across All Major Platforms

Updated:

The legendary Erdrick Trilogy's first two chapters arrive on modern platforms with stunning HD-2D visuals, launching October 30, 2025 for Switch, PS5, Xbox, and PC.

The wait is almost over for classic JRPG fans. Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake launches October 30, 2025 (October 31 on Steam), bringing the legendary adventures that started it all to modern platforms with gorgeous HD-2D visuals. Following the success of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake which moved over 2 million units, Square Enix continues completing the Erdrick Trilogy in HD-2D. Square Enix is bundling both games into a single package that reimagines Erdrick's tale for a new generation.

These aren't just any RPGs—they're the games that helped define the genre. Dragon Quest I introduced players to Alefgard, where you play as Erdrick's descendant tasked with defeating the Dragonlord and rescuing the realm. It was straightforward but revolutionary for its time, establishing many conventions still used in JRPGs today.

Dragon Quest II expanded the formula significantly, introducing party-based combat and a much larger world. Set generations after the first game, young princes and princesses of Erdrick's lineage must defend three kingdoms—Midenhall, Cannock, and Moonbrooke—against a massive monster invasion. The stakes are higher, the world is bigger, and the challenge ramps up considerably.

Rocky terrain exploration

The HD-2D visual style has proven itself with Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, blending nostalgic pixel art characters with detailed 3D environments and modern lighting. Seeing these classic Dragon Quest worlds rendered in this style feels like the perfect match—nostalgic yet fresh, preserving the spirit of the originals while making them accessible to modern audiences.

The remake includes quality-of-life improvements you'd expect from a modern release, though Square Enix has been careful to preserve what made these games special in the first place.

The game launches across virtually every major platform: Nintendo Switch & Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store). Cross-save functionality is supported, and there's even a neat bonus for players who own Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake—cosmetic dog and cat outfits for your characters.

Pre-orders come with the Trouble-Free Travel Kit, which includes helpful items like seeds and elevating shoes to make your journey a bit smoother. Both standard and collector's editions are available for those who want the full package.

Dragon Quest I & II might seem simple by today's standards, but they laid the groundwork for everything that came after. These are the games that proved turn-based RPGs could tell compelling stories, that exploration and discovery were just as important as combat, and that even simple narratives could be deeply satisfying when executed well.

For longtime fans, this is a chance to revisit where it all began with a fresh coat of paint. For newcomers, it's an opportunity to experience gaming history without the friction of outdated interfaces and systems.
