The 3rd Birthday Turns 15: Aya Brea's Controversial PSP Swan Song

15 years ago, Square Enix revived Parasite Eve with a PSP action RPG that divided fans. Its Overdive system remains one of gaming's most unique mechanics.

Fifteen years ago today, on December 22, 2010, Square Enix released The 3rd Birthday for the PlayStation Portable in Japan. The game marked the return of Aya Brea, the iconic protagonist from the Parasite Eve series, after more than a decade of silence. What players received was a technically impressive action RPG that would become one of the most divisive entries in Square Enix's catalog.

A Rebirth, Not a Sequel

The 3rd Birthday was conceived as a conceptual rebirth for Aya's character rather than a direct continuation of the Parasite Eve storyline. Director Hajime Tabata, who would later helm Final Fantasy XV, led the project alongside producer Yoshinori Kitase and writer Motomu Toriyama. Character designer Tetsuya Nomura returned to redesign Aya for a new generation.

The 3rd Birthday gameplay

The development team approached the project with ambitious goals - they designed the game as if it were for the PlayStation 3, then worked to compress that vision onto the PSP hardware. The result was one of the most visually stunning games on Sony's handheld.

The Overdive System

The 3rd Birthday's defining innovation was the Overdive mechanic. Aya gained the ability to transfer her consciousness into soldiers on the battlefield, instantly possessing their bodies. This wasn't just a gimmick - it formed the core of the combat system.

Overdive combat

Players could Overdive to recover health by switching to healthier units, avoid death by rapidly changing hosts, and strategically reposition during intense firefights. When a possessed soldier died, Aya could instantly jump to another, creating a frantic rhythm of possession and combat that no other game has replicated.

Fighting the Twisted

The story placed Aya in a devastated New York City, battling mysterious entities called the Twisted. These grotesque creatures had appeared suddenly, overwhelming military forces and threatening humanity's extinction. Aya, working with the CTI (Counter Twisted Investigation) team, used her unique Overdive abilities to fight back.

Weapon selection

Combat featured multiple weapon types - a handgun with unlimited ammunition served as the default, while assault rifles and sniper rifles offered more firepower at the cost of limited ammo. Players selected two weapons per mission alongside the handgun, requiring tactical loadout decisions.

Visual Excellence

Critics praised The 3rd Birthday's graphics as some of the best on PSP. Environments, monsters, and especially the CGI cutscenes pushed the handheld to its limits. When facing bosses or activating Overdive, the visual spectacle matched console-quality presentations.

Aya Brea

The game also featured a costume system where Aya's clothing would visibly deteriorate from battle damage, affecting her defensive capabilities. Alternative outfits unlocked through gameplay, including a crossover costume based on Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII.

Critical Reception

IGN's Patrick Kolan praised the effort put into the game, highlighting the battle system and later levels despite some repetition. GameSpot's Carolyn Petit noted the game succeeded in creating tension, though she criticized occasional frustrating battles and camera issues.

The game sold well enough to be considered a success for a PSP exclusive, though fan reception remained divided. Many Parasite Eve veterans felt the dramatic changes to Aya's character and the series' tone betrayed what made the originals special.

Legacy

The 3rd Birthday remains playable on PS Vita through digital downloads, preserving this unique chapter in gaming history. While Square Enix has shown no indication of reviving the Parasite Eve franchise, Aya Brea's PSP adventure stands as a fascinating experiment - a game that dared to completely reinvent its protagonist and gameplay systems.

Fifteen years later, the Overdive mechanic remains genuinely innovative. No other game has attempted anything quite like it, making The 3rd Birthday a singular experience in the action RPG genre.
