Halo: Campaign Evolved Announced as Ground-Up Remake Coming 2026

Updated:

The legendary shooter that defined a generation returns completely rebuilt from the ground up, featuring three new Sergeant Johnson missions and coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in 2026.

After years of speculation, it's finally happening. Halo: Campaign Evolved is coming in 2026 as a complete ground-up remake of the campaign that changed console shooters forever. This isn't just another remaster—343 Industries is rebuilding Halo: Combat Evolved from scratch with modern visuals, expanded content, and for the first time ever, PlayStation 5 support alongside Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Campaign Evolved goes far beyond visual upgrades. The team is adding three brand-new missions starring Sergeant Avery Johnson set before the events of the original game. These prequel missions will explore untold stories from before the Pillar of Autumn crash-landed on Installation 04.

The weapon sandbox gets a massive expansion too, pulling in nine additional weapons from across the Halo franchise. You'll finally be able to wield the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle in the original campaign. Vehicle gameplay gets upgraded with hijacking mechanics from later games, plus a four-seat Warthog for maximum chaos in co-op.

Campaign Evolved supports up to four players online with full cross-platform play across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Console players also get split-screen support for two players locally. That's 13 total missions—the original 10 plus three new Johnson chapters—all playable cooperatively.

The developers adjusted level design and difficulty scaling to accommodate the larger player count. They've also refined pacing and cinematics based on feedback from the 2011 Anniversary edition, ensuring the experience feels right whether you're playing solo or with a full squad.

Dozens of Skulls return with gameplay modifiers that can completely change your experience—randomized weapons, altered enemy behavior, environmental effects, and more. The audio gets a complete overhaul with remastered music, rebuilt sound design, and newly recorded voice acting from the original cast using period documentation and archival materials.

Even the Flood received updates, incorporating AI behaviors from later Halo games to make them more threatening and unpredictable. Combined with the expanded arsenal and refined controls, classic encounters should feel fresh even for veterans who've beaten the original dozens of times.

Progress carries across all platforms, so you can start on Xbox, continue on PC, and finish on PlayStation without losing anything. It's the unified Halo experience fans have wanted for years, and it's coming to more players than ever before.

The announcement didn't include pricing or a specific release date beyond 2026, but this is shaping up to be the definitive way to experience the campaign that started it all. Whether you're a longtime fan ready to return to Installation 04 or a newcomer curious about what all the fuss was about back in 2001, Campaign Evolved looks like it'll deliver.
