Dark December serves as a prequel to Needs Games' 2022 hack-and-slash hit Undecember, taking players back to a time before the Rune Hunter ever encountered Serpens. Rather than reprising that role, players join the Syrian tribe on an adventure that uncovers the secrets of the gods and their own identity.

The story centers on the battle against heretical forces seeking to resurrect the "distorted god" Valknute by targeting primordial essences. Players must fight to save the world from despair in this gothic dark fantasy setting.

Departing from Undecember's classless system, Dark December introduces three distinct character classes designed to support different playstyles:
