Witchfire: The Dark Fantasy Shooter from Painkiller and Bulletstorm Veterans

The Astronauts' extraction shooter blends Souls-like challenge with FPS gunplay. 91% positive reviews, full release mid-2026.

Witchfire has been quietly building a devoted following since entering Early Access in September 2024. Created by The Astronauts, the studio founded by former People Can Fly developers behind Painkiller and Bulletstorm, this dark fantasy FPS blends punishing difficulty with slick gunplay in ways few games have attempted.

A Witch Hunter's Redemption

Players assume the role of a wicked sinner turned witch hunter, embarking on what may be their final mission toward salvation. Each expedition takes you into cursed lands where you'll battle nightmarish creatures, scavenge resources, and make the critical decision of when to extract or push forward against increasingly dangerous Familiars.

Extraction Meets Souls-like

The game occupies a unique space in the shooter landscape. It's part extraction shooter, requiring you to carefully manage risk versus reward as you venture deeper into hostile territory. It's part Souls-like, with punishing combat that demands precision and patience. And it's all wrapped in gothic horror aesthetics that would feel at home in the most twisted corners of dark fantasy.

Proven Pedigree

The Astronauts isn't a newcomer to ambitious projects. The studio previously released The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, the acclaimed first-person mystery game that showcased their ability to create atmospheric, visually stunning experiences. With Witchfire, they're returning to their action roots while incorporating everything they learned about environmental storytelling and immersion.

The developers have been transparent about their timeline, targeting a mid-2026 launch for the full 1.0 release. With 91% positive reviews from over 8,700 players, the community response has been overwhelmingly supportive of the game's direction.
