Arc System Works releases Double Dragon Revive tomorrow, October 23, 2025, bringing the legendary beat 'em up franchise to contemporary platforms. The modernized belt-scroll action game launched simultaneously across PlayStation 5/4, Xbox Series X|S/One, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Epic Games Store, marking a new chapter for the series that defined the genre in 1987.

Set 15 years after nuclear war devastated civilization, Double Dragon Revive transported players to a coastal colony controlled by the Shadow Warriors criminal organization. Governmental structures collapsed into localized authoritarian rule, creating stark wealth disparity and spawning rumors of mysterious disappearances in impoverished districts.

Dynamic combat gameplay

The Lee brothers—practical Billy and free-spirited Jimmy—practiced Shuai Jiao martial arts alongside childhood friend Marian in the colony's margins. When their heritage intersected with urban conspiracy, the siblings deployed their combat expertise against the Shadow Warriors' grip on power.

Arc System Works leveraged its fighting game pedigree to craft exhilarating action that honored the 1987 original while introducing contemporary mechanics. The combat system emphasized freedom of movement through parkour and swing jumps, replacing traditional four-directional constraints with fluid traversal.

Advanced combat mechanics

Basic attacks chained automatically through button combinations, with contextual variations like the powerful Wall Strike technique activated near environmental structures. The grab system enabled diverse actions: striking, kicking, throwing, wall-crushing, improvised weapon usage, and object launching. Wall Crash techniques delivered devastating damage when slamming enemies against solid surfaces.

Hyper Blows provided armor properties crucial when surrounded, while mid-air variants created shockwave impacts from sufficient altitude. The Dragon Orb Gauge accumulated through creative play—consecutive hits without damage, weapon usage, and environmental interaction granted multipliers. Consuming 100% gauge triggered finishing blow techniques.

Environmental instant-kill gimmicks scattered throughout stages eliminated enemies regardless of health, enabling efficient boss encounters. The Critical Assault system rewarded tactical awareness with bonus counter-windows marked by blue light during specific enemy attacks. Proper responses granted gauge increases and enemy stuns.

The playable roster featured Billy, Jimmy, Marian, and Yagyu-Ranzou, each with distinct fighting styles. Voice actor Kazuyuki Okitsu brought Billy Lee to life, characterizing him as an upright fighter opposing injustice. Billy's motivation stemmed from childhood—after Marian's father aided him, he committed to using martial arts to help others.

The enemy roster included Abobo, Roper, Joji, Williams, Ahn, Mihn, Marcus, Linda, Willy, and Raymond, each presenting unique combat challenges throughout the campaign.

Three editions catered to different player preferences. The Standard Edition (¥4,950) offered the complete game across digital and physical formats. The Deluxe Edition (¥5,940, digital only) bundled digital artwork, soundtrack, additional character colors, and 24-hour early access on PlayStation and Xbox platforms.

The Collector's Edition (¥9,900, PlayStation 5 physical exclusive) delivered premium packaging with a special box, B5 poster, reversible jacket, physical soundtrack, art book, and DLC codes for Deluxe upgrade plus Double Dragon Dodgeball.

Pre-order customers received Double Dragon Dodge Ball—an exclusive collaboration between Double Dragon and the legendary Kunio-kun franchise. This bonus game featured 60 playable characters (54 playable plus 6 hidden enemy-exclusive) across Double Dragon history. Multiple battle modes included Story, Duel, and Survival supporting up to 4 players. Meeting in-game conditions unlocked Kunio-kun's Nekketsu High School Dodge Ball Club team as secret characters.

The soundtrack featured collaborations with renowned video game composers including 来兎 and James Landino, blending melodic sensibilities with contemporary sound design to complement the frenetic action.
